BUFFALO, N.Y. — New York State Police will be out in full force this week, making sure travelers are safe on all major roads after the snowfall Western New York received Monday.
With winter weather comes poor visibility. Drivers are asked to keep their headlights on, to remove all snow from windows, and be sure to check the weather before getting behind the wheel. State Police also remind drivers to store gloves, blankets, a flashlight, a first aid kit and a tool kit in the trunk of your car in case you become stranded on the road.
If you happen to break down, police say to stay in your car and call 911 immediately. Knowing what direction you are traveling and the nearest mile-marker will help emergency workers get to you faster.
Winter also brings slippery roads, if you happen to drive off the road and get stuck in a snowbank or ditch stay in your car and dial 911. Roll down your windows a few inches and turn off your vehicle. If the snow covers a vehicle's muffler serious injury could occur if you breathe in the carbon monoxide.
Remember to check for the latest forecast before driving and keep in mind the snow accumulations, snowfall rate, wind, and the visibility to plan a safe commute.
