Puerto Rico disaster relief help sought across Western New York

Community leaders are looking for donations of household supplies, clothes, non-perishable food items and more.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Western New York Latino community is working to provide disaster relief for Puerto Rico.

They are mobilizing aid and helping those seeking refuge in Buffalo, and you can help.

They are looking for donations of household supplies, clothes, non-perishable food items and more.

"We are already starting to see families coming in from the island," Nadia Pizarro said. "We estimate there is up to 15 households at this time with new families coming in each day. They're coming to the city of buffalo with no coats no boots from a tropical island to winter climate weather, and they have a lot of needs."

Ladies of Charity at 1122 Broadway Avenue is accepting food, clothing, household and personal care items to be sent to the island. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, as well as the first Saturday of each month.

The location at 525 Washington Street will accept food, personal care items and school supplies.

The location at 20 Herkimer will accept toys and school supplies.

There's also a nationwide Facebook account set up for help.

Chito Olivencia, a leader in the Western New York Puerto Rican community, told 2 On Your Side, "People are scared. People don't want to go out. You don't see them in the streets, even though its 80 something degrees and nice sunny out."
