VP Harris meets with Tops shooting victims' families during Buffalo visit

Zaire Goodman's mother, Zeneta Everhart, spoke with 2 On Your Side about Saturday's meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — While Vice President Kamala Harris was Buffalo on Saturday, she met with families of some of the other victims from the May 14 mass shooting at the Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue.

She also met and spoke with one of the survivors, Zaire Goodman, whose mother spoke with 2 On Your Side about Saturday's meeting.

"She said that she was sorry for what happened to him and that she wanted to work to make things better in dealing with domestic terrorism," Zeneta Everhart said. "And Zaire said he wants to help, and that's just who Zaire is. He's not thinking about his wounds right now."

She says her son is doing well, although he has a long road to recovery. Zaire has shrapnel still inside his body, and it will be removed when his other wounds heal.

The Vice President also met with some members of the families of Pearl Young and Margus Morrison, they were among the 10 people killed at Tops on May 14.

Pamela Pritchett, daughter of the late Pearl Young told 2 On Your Side's Claudine Ewing, "one of the things I do need is the anti-hate crime bill because the person who came here and committed this crime, it was clearly because of racism and I let her know that as well."

The families realized the visit was short as VP Harris was in town for the funeral of Ruth Whitfield. The plan to continue the conversation.

Michelle Spight who is related to both families said, "she accepted our request and invited us to the White House." No date or time has been set.

Change is needed and wanted.

"The system is not broken, the system is working exactly like it was supposed to work. The system needs to be broken down and redone again. Domestic terrorism needs to be the focus," said Dominique Douglas, cousin of the late Margus Morrison.
