Halloween ended with tragedy in Greece after one child was killed and another significantly injured after being struck by an oncoming car on Latta Road on Friday.

Tayvier Granderson, 3, of Murray Street and Nicole Moore, 16, of Snug Harbor Drive were trick-or-treating and crossing the two-lane road when a westbound vehicle hit both of them shortly before 9:42 p.m., said Greece Police Department Sgt. Jared Rene. The accident occurred about a half mile east of the Dewey Avenue intersection.

Granderson died shortly after the incident, and Moore was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, Rene said. The 77-year-old driver of the car is cooperating with police, and no tickets have been issued. He has not been identified.

Police Chief Patrick Phelan said Saturday that a group of Rochester residents came to Greece to trick-or-treat. Granderson and Moore both exited vehicles and crossed the road to enter a suburban neighborhood to begin going door to door when they were hit.

The investigation is ongoing as to whether or not alcohol or bad weather was a factor in the crash.

"It certainly is the worst scenario that we could've imagined for Halloween," Rene said. "We're going to do the investigation and figure out exactly what happened."

Phelan, who called the incident a "horrible tragedy," said the Granderson and Moore families knew each other. The 77-year-old driver that struck them was with his wife driving home from dinner. A blood sample was taken a precaution, but Phelan said if there were any obvious signs of intoxication Friday night, he would have been charged.
