2 victims of Baltimore bridge collapse identified as CASA members

“In a time when there is so much hatred against the immigrant community, we look to the story of Maynor and Miguel who built bridges to connect communities."

BALTIMORE — Two longtime members of the Maryland community have died after a bridge collapse in Baltimore on Tuesday.

CASA, a Latino and immigration advocacy and assistance-based organization in Maryland, confirms that both 34-year-old Maynor Suazo Sandoval, of Honduras, and 40-year-old Miguel Luna, of El Salvador, were working on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

In total, there were eight men filling potholes on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed Tuesday morning. Two of those workers did survive. One is still in the hospital. They all worked for a contractor called Brawner Builders.

As of Wednesday, there are still six workers unaccounted for and presumed dead. Among those six are Sandoval, a married father of two from Honduras who has been in the U.S. for 18 years, and 40-year-old Luna, an immigrant from El Salvador who was married with three children and lived in Maryland for over 19 years.

Both men were members of CASA.

There are still four unknown victims.

“In a time when there is so much hatred against the immigrant community, we look to the story of Maynor and Miguel who built bridges to connect communities, not building walls to divide them. Today and always we honor them and their sacrifices," CASA said in a statement on Wednesday.
