12 people sickened over possible Salmonella contaminated basil sold at Trader Joe's

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Trader Joe's announced Wednesday they are recalling their organic basil due to possible Salmonella contamination. 

The Infinite Herbs Organic Basil, which was sold in the 2.5 oz packages between February 1, 2024 and April 6, 2024 is being recalled by the grocery store chain.

At least 12 people from seven states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella after being exposed to fresh organic basil purchased from Trader Joe's before becoming ill, according to the Food and Drug Administration. 

The FDA says illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated food and could lasts four to seven days. Symptoms of Salmonella include: diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. 

People with weakened immune systems, elderly people and children under five are are more likely to have severe infections.

The basil was sold in several states, including: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, DC and Wisconsin. 

If you purchased the basil during the date range listed above,  you should throw it away, or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

The FDA is still investigating the source of the contamination and will provide more updates as they investigate.
