Celebrating a 100-year-old's birthday, and his commitment to service

Prince Whitstone has been volunteering with People Inc. for 24 years. They recently celebrated his 100th birthday, and his time serving as a volunteer.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — To make it to 100 years old is a milestone, and it's better when you don't need any extra help. It's exactly what happened to 100-year-old Prince Whitstone.

"I never rush into it. I take it one day at a time. I always did it by myself. Never had anybody else," Whitstone said.

People Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps senior citizens, threw a birthday party for Whitstone, now 100 years old. It's not just a celebration of his age but also a big thank you for his 24 years of service as a volunteer.

"He has been a volunteer through America Core for 24 years and with People Inc. so it's a testament to his great attitude," said president and CEO of People Inc., Anne McCaffrey.

"When you do good, appreciation will come to you, and I appreciate how you treat me today," Whitstone said.

It wouldn't be a party without food and cake. Whitstone's friends and volunteer family had chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and more. It's enough to fill their bellies up just before their afternoon nap.

"I'm glad to be able to see the appreciation for what I did. Like I said a while ago, when I was 60 I couldn't see anything but I can see now. I appreciate it," he said.
