DEC invites Western New York residents to learn about local fisheries

The DEC said fishing brings more than $17 million into New York State each year.

BLASDELL, N.Y. — As we get closer and closer to ideal fishing weather, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation invited Western New York residents to learn about our local fisheries.

According to biologists, regional fishing is better than it has ever been. That's why now is a great time to get the next generation interested in the great outdoors.

"The biggest talking point lately, for many years, has been the record-setting quality of the walleye fishery in Lake Erie. It's as good as its ever been since we've been keeping records for four decades," the DEC's Jason Robinson said.

The DEC said fishing brings more than $17 million into New York State each year.

"We're really lucky. In Lake Erie, our four main species — steelhead, yellow perch, walleye, and smallmouth bass — are all way above average right now, and that's kind of an unprecedented situation. Good fishing across the board for all four species," Robinson said.
